Battle for the House

It'll be a few months before we know the final congressional district lines, but both Democrat and Republican parties alike are still recruiting candidates in full force. We’ve got an early look at some of the most interesting potential as well as a few declared challengers in some hotly contested House races. Early recruitment will be essential to the GOP’s bid to take back the majority — since they missed it in 2020 in large part thanks to a number of lackluster recruits in various key districts.

The number of key candidates to watch seems to be never ending including Senator Zach Nunn, Rep. Cindy Axne, Rep. Chris Croft, etc.

The days until the 2024 election is well over 1,000 however these conversations are still getting started and being discussed and it's something to keep an eye out for, that's for sure!

  1. Both the Democrats and the Republicans actively nominate candidates to secure the most important and highly contested seats. For the Republicans to regain their majority, they must remain focused on early recruitment, especially on the key districts, to avoid losing it in 2020. The Republicans are following the Democrat's footsteps of 2018 by bearing down on the veteran candidates. For instance, Jen Kiggans, a state senator and a navy pilot who shifted into nursing, is launching a Virginia campaign that targets Democratic Representative Elaine Luria, with which the democrats acknowledge Kiggans as a powerful opponent (Mutnick & Montellaro, 2021). House Democrats focus their efforts on their white giants, the centrist suburban Republicans that have eluded them in previous elections. Several challengers are preparing to run against Representative Don Bacon. State Senator Tony Vargas, the son of Peruvian immigrants who has served in the unicameral since 2017 and formerly served on a school board, is one Democrat who is expected to run. A crowd is gathering in Southern California to oppose GOP Representative Mike Garcia, another top Democratic priority (Mutnick & Montellaro, 2021). Aside from Christy Smith, who is running for a third term after losing in a special election in 2019 and the 2020 election, talk is growing that former Democratic Representative Katie Hill is an interested candidate for a comeback. Power is changing in the United States, where every party wants to have a seat at the table with their best representative. The real struggle is between the democrats and the republicans, where each party wants to emerge the winner. This will only be determined by the early recruitments, especially for the GOP, to ensure that they secure the preeminent representatives to the party's success.

    1. I really appreciate this post. It provides a quick but important update on what could be one of the most pivotal House elections to take place in decades. The Presidential election of 2024 is going to be one for the books which again really makes this next House grab especially important for Republicans who’s Presidential nominee is up for grabs and held hostage by the possibility of Trump running again. With that possibility looming overhead and the historical difficulty of unseating a sitting President the GOP will need to pick their house nominees carefully and intentionally to ensure they have some control if the Presidential election is not won.
