What will Biden Administration's Syria Policy look like?

The withdrawal of American troops can hurt the credibility of the U.S.  Experts went on to say that a slight change can also be seen regarding the refugee border policies as during Trump’s time in office not many refugees were accepted into the U.S., while Iraq and Syria will not be evaluated separately during the Biden presidency.

As Joe Biden is fairly new to his Presidency and has not held power for long, it is difficult to say anything certain regarding his approach to the Syrian conflict. Predictions can be made but it is quite uncertain how the outcome will prevail itself. However, before taking any step for the resolution of the conflict, including imposing new sanctions or increasing the number of troops, the U.S. must take into account the current problems, the hopes, and the expectations of the Syrian people – both those living inside and outside of Syria.

  1. Given his immediate attention on Syria, President Biden is likely to halt the withdrawal of American troops from Syria so as not to hurt the credibility of the US. Besides, the conflict in Syria would never be fully resolved if the US pulled its troops out. Hence, given that the US is engaged in the conflict, there is a likelihood that the troops will remain there until a solution has been found, and the country might even send more troops to Syria. Alongside the EU, Iran, Russia, and Turkey, the US will be involved.

The article also highlights that Biden’s administration would adopt a more relaxed border policy towards Syrian refugees. For a start, unlike in the past, refugees from both Iraq and Syria will not be separately evaluated. This approach signals a significant shift from Trump’s administration that adopted a tough policy regarding the Syrian refugees. It is highly likely that in the coming days, refugees from Syrian will be more welcome in the US.

While still fairly new to the presidency, the airstrikes against Syria indicated that his administration will not shy away from using both soft and hard powers in the region. In the recent past, Biden’s administration has renewed increased sanctions against Damascus, highlighting that both soft and hard powers will be used to push Syria closer to negotiations. One of the most important things that the article notes are that any deployment of US troops will be accompanied by a clear-cut mission. Expertly, the article explains that Syrians themselves will have to be heavily involved in resolving the conflict because it all began with their dissatisfaction with their government.
