Second Impeachment?!

Yep, you read that right!  Donald Trump is the only President to have been impeached twice.  However, he was acquitted both times.

Just this past weekend, the Senate met for former President Donald Trump's second impeachment trial voting that Trump is not guilty of inciting the Capitol riots that took place just a month before on January 6, 2021.  Alongside the 50 Democrats who found him guilty, a total of seven republicans also voted in favor of finding him guilty and having him impeached.  However, Trump was acquitted because they did not reach a two-thirds majority necessary to convict one.  They were 10 short of the necessary threshold to have him found guilty.

This entire event was pretty historic in that, as I mentioned before, he is the only President in our nations history to be impeached twice.  Additionally, one of his impeachment trials took place in the Senate when he was not even in office!

  1. I think it is crazy how they impeached him while not holding a public office, which was one of the main push points from his attorney to get them to drop the charges. If he did get impeached what would he be removed from? I think I read somewhere how this trail cost over $50 MILLION. Thats alot of money to get someone out of office who isnt legally in office anymore.

  2. It is interesting to see Trump go through two impeachments since as you said, no other president has had to go through this. Your point about the split in votes during the impeachment really does show the divide in our political sphere. The Democrats as a whole can not stand Trump and want to see him convicted, while the Republicans (other then the 7 you mentioned) see Trump as doing no wrong before, during, and after the Capitol riot. In my opinion, this truly is the biggest political separation that we have ever seen in our countries history.

  3. I can see where the confusion comes from when people ask why did he have to be impeached but it was also necessary. The riots only happened because of massive lies he told about the election and this incited people to react that way and go as far as to attack the capitol. It may seem like far fetched but if it had been anyone else, they would have been impeached as well and removed from office. Trump did cause great damage with those lies and he only lied because he was butthurt he lost.

  4. As you mentioned, this was a historic event and the nation's political climate is dramatically impacted by it. Throughout the two impeachment trials, and even in the events that transpired, it seems the nation became more politically divided than ever before. Therefore, it is no surprise that news outlets have been jumping at every opportunity to push out this story. This occurrence is one that has had the attention of the entire nation start to finish so, in regards to the interests of the media, the phases of this political downfall is the main focus of news outlets when publishing both digital and print headlines.
